THE GREAT WAR AND ITS IMPACT
MUST BE SUBMITTED ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 22ND, BY UPLOADING IT TO THE CANVAS SUBMISSION SITE BY 11:59 PM THE SAME DAY.
In Chapter 2, we have been studying the influence of The Great War on literature and the
visual art. By the end of the war casualties numbered around 10 million and around twice
that many were wounded. Many artists and writers experienced the brutal reality of the
war and the nightmare of trench warfare firsthand. Many artists and writers began
incorporating a sense of crisis, doubt, and despair into their work.
INSTRUCTIONS
Write an essay of at least five paragraphs in length in which you trace The Great War’s
impact by comparing and contrasting two (2) different examples of visual art or literature
that detail the change. Choose your examples from ones listed below.
When you discuss literature, you are expected to utilize direct quotations from the
literature to demonstrate the parallels. If you discuss visual art, utilize specific examples to
illustrate, and be sure to discuss motifs, styles, and/or elements.
WRITING REQUIREMENTS
Essay should be 750-1000 words in length.

Essay should be typed, double-spaced.
Use size 12 font.
Essay should contain a minimum of three body paragraphs (plus introductory and concluding paragraphs).
Essay should have clear topic sentences at the start of each body paragraph.
Essay should relate back to the thesis (main) idea at the end of each body paragraph.
Essay should avoid the use of 1st or 2nd person (“I”, “we,” “us,” or “you”).
Essay should contain a Works Cited page listing for at least two primary and/or
secondary sources you cite in your essay, and in-text citations for quoted or paraphrased
material.If you do not know how to properly cite those sources, consult with a librarian.
Essay should demonstrate “Cultural and Historical Understanding” by clearly explaining how and/or why The Great War influenced visual art or literature. (For example, if you are discussing Yeats’ work, and you wish to illustrate by comparing the “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” and the “The Second Coming,” be sure you also discuss how or why those two poems are different. Why did this change take place? What words or phrases illustrate the differences?)
