The purpose of the assignment is to have students explore their own positionality, values, power, etc. in relation to increasingly diverse and globalized world. Moreover this assignment serves as pragmatic exercise in professional development. Places of employment are increasingly requiring diversity statements.
Early in the semester students will write a 2 page diversity statement (5 percent of grade).
Increasingly, places of employment are becoming more intentional and programmatic about their efforts to embrace principles of inclusion, equity, justice, and diversity. As they do so, they are more focused on finding applicants who have experiences and competencies that can contribute to these efforts. Consequently, universities, law schools, etc. frequently are requesting that job applicants address how they can contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity within their community in the form of a “diversity statement.” A diversity statement is a personal essay that is a depiction of your past experiences and explains how these experiences have contributed to your personal and professional growth. It allows the applicant the opportunity to explain to a hiring committee the distinct qualities and commitment they can bring to the table.

Students will peer review as well re-examine their own statement in relation to course material.
Students will be assigned a diversity statement to peer-review by the instructor. Please track all changes made on the document and provide constructive feedback as well as spaces for improvement. Be sure to bring up any relevant course content or critique that may be relevant.
Students will submit a revised 2-3 page diversity statement with an short addendum explaining changes. This is due April 13th for an in class activity on Blackboard (10 percent of grade)
The final diversity statement should include two documents. A clean final draft version of your diversity statement and an addendum that includes your tracked changes as well as brief outline underscoring what changes were made and why.
