Diversity of life

This assignment takes places in 3 parts where students will critically reflect and analyze elements of their statement in relation to course material. The purpose of the assignment is to have students explore their own positionality, values, power, etc. in relation to increasingly diverse and globalized world. Moreover this assignment serves as pragmatic exercise in professional development. Places of employment are increasingly requiring diversity statements.

Early in the semester students will write a 2 page diversity statement (5 percent of grade).
Increasingly, places of employment are becoming more intentional and programmatic about their efforts to embrace principles of inclusion, equity, justice, and diversity. As they do so, they are more focused on finding applicants who have experiences and competencies that can contribute to these efforts. Consequently, universities, law schools, etc. frequently are requesting that job applicants address how they can contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity within their community in the form of a “diversity statement.” A diversity statement is a personal essay that is a depiction of your past experiences and explains how these experiences have contributed to your personal and professional growth. It allows the applicant the opportunity to explain to a hiring committee the distinct qualities and commitment they can bring to the table.

Diversity Statements are highly personal and unique. No two are alike and each is dependent on one’s positionality and subjective experience. In crafting your diversity statement, tailor it to a potential source of employment or graduate school application.
