One concept that was taught differently when I was in elementary school than it is now is the way teen numbers are introduced. During my observations in a kindergarten classroom, the teacher introduced teen numbers the “say ten” way. This concept uses ten frames to show students that a teen number is 1 group of ten and some extras. This makes sense to students since they are often confused when they hear teen numbers orally. For example, when students hear fourteen they hear the four first when in reality the ten is first and then four ones. I do not remember exactly how I was introduced to teen numbers but I will ensure I implement this concept into my approach to teaching math for young students. To promote students thinking beyond the right answer I will provide students with multiple methods for solving a problem. This gives them the opportunity to pick which method makes the most sense to them instead of solving a problem in a specific way just to get the right answer. I will also encourage conversation with students about their thought process that helped them solve a problem as well as having them share with their peers to promote the importance of communication.
